Glossary: Washer
A fixing washer is a round-shaped component placed between a screw or a nut and the fastening surface in order to reduce friction and distribute the tightening force evenly across the part.
A finishing washer is designed to improve the aesthetic appearance of an assembly.
Characteristics and functions of washers
The fixing washer, flat and thin, helps distribute the tightening force more evenly and therefore prevents the fixed material from cracking due to excessive pressure. Its other function is to limit loosening of the bolt, screw or nut by reducing friction. These washers, also known as flat washers, are available in two formats: standard washer and large washer.
The finishing washer, also known as a cup washer, is thicker and mainly intended to provide a clean and professional finish. It is also useful for protecting the fastening surface and for absorbing shocks and vibrations.
These two types of plastic washers share common characteristics. Made from nylon, these washers protect the screw or nut against corrosion and are also an excellent solution for electrical fastenings thanks to the insulating properties of plastic. However, they do not serve the same purpose: one is primarily used to reduce friction and ensure assembly stability, while the other is mainly intended for aesthetic finishing.
